Y4 Jorvik

This half term, Year 4 swapped their classrooms for the muddy streets of 10th-century York as they embarked on an unforgettable journey to JORVIK Viking Centre and the DIG. It was a day filled with foul smells, ancient treasures and hands-on discovery that brought our history curriculum to life.
Our journey began at JORVIK, where we stepped into "time capsules" and were transported back to the year 975AD. As we travelled through the reconstructed settlement of Coppergate, we saw Viking families at work and heard them speaking old Norse. The authentic smells of the blacksmith’s fire and the pungent fish market certainly made a lasting impression.
Next, we headed to the DIG to test our skills as historians. After a quick briefing from professional archaeologists, we grabbed our trowels and headed into the excavation pits. We worked in teams to unearth artefacts and learnt that history isn't just in books—it’s right beneath our feet.
The highlight for many was our workshop, where we met a 'real' Viking warrior. We practised forming a formidable shield wall and learned the tactics used by real Viking warriors. The sheer weight of the replica helmets and shields gave us a real respect for the strength of the Norse people.
It was a fantastic day of learning that we won't soon forget!
