During Enterprise Fortnight, Year 6 spent time learning about the importance of money, different methods of payment and how to budget for the future. They then put these skills into practice by turning each class into its own business. After carrying out market research, each class chose a product to design, make and sell to the rest of the school.
To be more environmentally friendly, Year 6’s aim was to create products using 100% recycled materials, encouraging pupils to think carefully about sustainability as well as enterprise. Each class came up with a different idea: 6M made bookmarks from recycled cardboard, 6A created multi-purpose jars using donated glass jars, 6S designed cards for a range of occasions using recycled card and paper, with each one including seeds to grow plants, and 6R made sun visors from recycled cardboard and paper.
Before making their products, each class wrote a business pitch to Miss Alderson to secure an investment for the materials they needed. Every class successfully pitched their idea and received the funding to get started.
The children worked hard throughout the fortnight to make, promote and sell their products. Their efforts were rewarded with a successful sale to the rest of the school which raised just over £200. It was a great opportunity for Year 6 to develop their teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills while gaining a real insight into how businesses work.
